I read about the questline and I went to all the locations, first I bought his armor from Patches, went to the well and gave it Siegward.There are as of yet unconfirmed reports you can actually save him on his third trip during NG+ if you don't by Siegward's armor from Patches and instead give Siegward your set from the previous playthrough.
